Artist Highlight
This issue features art of Olivier Lamboray, a Belgian surrealist who has been developing his style over more than 20 years. His art is mind twisting -- it calls the viewer to revisit what they know about familiar objects and depicts an illusion of the real world. In his paintings, buildings evaporate and mix with clouds, trains ride on water or go through walls, animals develop human features and silently communicate with the viewer. Lamboray’s art is a great illustration of the state between sleeping and being awake. It is the state of dreaming, where people can fly, walk through obstacles, understand the deep meaning of everything that happens around them. This is the state in which people are the most intuitive and in touch with true self. Lamboray’s art is very enigmatic. Partially it is due to his experimenting with colors, forms, shapes of objects, all of which creates a sense of illusion. The animals are blue, the walls are see-through, the stairs are like piano keys. While these images may seem strange at first, they make people think and reflect. The viewers may agree or disagree with Olivier’s vision of the world, yet his art will not leave anyone indifferent. Most of Lamvray’s paintings are very peaceful. The sense of peacefulness and serenity comes from the presence of Love in every painting. One can recognize the feeling of love in lovers kissing each other, in people waiting for beloved ones at a train station, in devoted eyes of a dog, or in a playing little girl…. Olivier Lamboray shared about his art , “Love, blowing a positive blue wind, surrounds the overall feeling of the scenery, and the presence of a huge Moon, connects us to the Greatness of the Universe. The presence of animals in my stories, that astonishingly became all blue, reflects the great value of all spectrums of life and the respect I have for the animal world, a compassion for Life in general.” This is Olivier’s contribution in inviting the viewers to reflect on the purpose of life, meaning of things, and spirituality. The art of Olivier Lamboray is very compatible with the ideas of SEAM. First is that what people think they see or know, may not be the full reality. People’s perceptions may be simply an illusion. The familiar things that compose an organization may be illusory. At the same time, many things that cannot be seen are very real. For example, hidden costs reduce organizational profits and effectiveness, and yet they remain for many out of sight. In the same manner, magical thinking is not recognized or addressed, yet it destroys employee health and morale. The other thing that makes Lamboray’s art compatible with SEAM is love that underlines his paintings. Those organizations that have love and respect for the people at the center of their culture are the most effective, productive, and humane. |
